Overview

A vocational training provider needed course delivery to students on unreliable mobile data. We built an offline-first app around that constraint.

01Challenge

Challenge

Students studied on commutes and in areas with patchy coverage. The existing web courses failed constantly, progress was lost mid-lesson, and completion rates sat low enough to threaten the programme's funding.

02Strategy

Strategy

We treated connectivity as the primary design constraint rather than an edge case. Lessons download as bundles, all progress is written locally first and synced opportunistically, and the interface always states what is available offline. We tested on mid-range Android devices on throttled connections throughout the build.

03Solution

Solution

A Flutter app with downloadable lesson bundles, local-first progress tracking with conflict-safe sync, assessments that complete fully offline, and a lightweight instructor dashboard for cohort progress. The brand system was built alongside so the app, certificates and marketing shared one identity.

What we built

The parts that carry the workload.

  • 01

    Downloadable lessons

Course bundles including video, text and assessments stored for offline study with clear storage controls.

  • 02

    Local-first progress

Progress written to the device immediately and synced when a connection returns, without data loss.

  • 03

    Offline assessments

Quizzes completed and scored on-device, submitted with results reconciled server-side later.

  • 04

    Instructor dashboard

Cohort progress, at-risk learners and assessment results in a single view.

  • 05

    Certificates

Verifiable completion certificates generated automatically against the brand system.

Screens

Figures shown are illustrative placeholders for this sample case study.

They built for the phone our students actually own, on the connection they actually have. That single decision changed the outcome.
